The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening intervention designed to:

  • reduce auditory hypersensitivities,
  • improve auditory processing,
  • calm physiological state and
  • support spontaneous social engagement.

As Dr. Porges describes it, the 5-day SSP program provides the “neural platform for neuroplasticity” and better access to “executive and cognitive functions.”

The ripple effects of the SSP have been wide. In the first six months of its availability, 250 therapists have incorporated the SSP into their practice and some of them have already used the SSP with more than 100 clients. Clients and therapists are witnessing  some wonderful results.

SSP Feedback:

“There seems to be a better sense of control about my emotions and a sense of balance and calm.  It has been extremely rewarding to be more deliberate and aware of my reactions.  This change has improved the communication and conflict resolution in some of my most important relationships.”

– 53-year old woman struggling with sleep, attention and motivation problems following the death of her husband 1 ½ years ago

“She has shown the most improvement in her desire to communicate nonverbally.  She now uses facial expressions, laughs, plays and points to what she needs.  She has more of a desire to communicate and play with other children.  She even started to pretend play after the program! Her social interaction is definitely improving even as a nonverbal child.  She seems to be making little strides every day and is even trying to speak more.”

– Mother of a nonverbal girl who had been concerned about her communication difficulties

“Much less trouble controlling emotions and excitement.  Better control of emotions and fewer tantrums now.”

– Father of a young boy with ASD who was concerned about his poor emotional control

New Webinar

Last, we have a new webinar available this week titled Using the SSP with Adults. Since adults can respond differently to the SSP than children, together with Dr. Porges, we have created a 30-minute webinar. While it focuses on those who have survived trauma, the guidelines and advice offered are helpful whether your adult client is working on trauma issues or not. In a series of videos, Dr. Porges discusses the importance of co-regulation, using movement and breathing as tools to support the client and advice on adjusting the intervention based on the client’s tolerance. This optional webinar has been added to the <strong>SSP Training and is accessible at no additional charge.
