Provider Spotlight: Dr. Nicole Black — The Clinician as a Container for Healing from Complex Trauma

May 3, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Working with complex trauma, clinicians are tasked with capturing and holding all of the non-verbal aspects of trauma. How do we as clinicians create a space that is both therapeutic and strong enough to hold the non-verbal, relational, and visceral fragments of trauma? This learning session will focus on the intersection of complex trauma symptoms, Polyvagal Theory and the Safe and Sound Protocol to highlight the unspoken aspects of trauma and how clinicians can utilize their own nervous system to create a supportive container for our most traumatized and dysregulated clients.
In this session we will:
  • Review the domains of complex trauma
  • Explore how Polyvagal Theory can be utilized for clinicians to tune into their own nervous system
  • Investigate the intersection of complex trauma symptoms and Polyvagal Theory as a point of reflection for clinician self-assessment and countertransference
  • Discuss how the SSP can support the process of supporting healing in complex trauma clients
  • Explore the non-verbal, visceral responses to trauma triggers within the therapeutic relationship, how to mindfully contain those within our own nervous system and use our regulated self as a means for co-regulating the client into new ways of being and experiencing healing relationships
