Why sleep is important

Dreampad Waves

Put simply, if you don’t sleep well, you’re tired and lack energy. Sleep quality and quantity affect our ability to focus, attend to tasks and achieve successful therapy.

The same applies for your clients. It’s much easier to have successful therapy sessions and long-term results with clients who have the energy to work on the tasks at hand.

How much sleep are your clients getting each night? Does it take a long time for them to settle into sleep? Are they waking up throughout the night?

These are all issues that can affect their energy, and thus, their therapeutic success with you.

How can the Dreampad help your clients

The Dreampad is a completely different experience than listening to music through a sound machine or a traditional speaker. Its specially-treated music has a unique sound, and a unique effect on your body and mind.

Once your head is relaxed on the Dreampad, the music travels internally through bone conduction, signaling your body’s natural relaxation response so you can ease into a great night’s sleep. Added plus: it’s for your ears only. If you have a sleeping partner, they won’t hear a thing.

If you work with clients experiencing symptoms from stress and anxiety, let us know! We’d love to work with you to help your clients and document their success!

Dreampad Technology and Therapeutic Effect

Dreampad Sleep

Dreampad technology is based on the natural conductivity of the human body, a principle known as ‘bone conduction.’  Every time we speak we hear ourselves in two ways: through ‘air conduction’ (air-conducted sound waves coming from our mouth and entering our outer ear) and through ‘bone conduction’ (the sound vibration emanating from our voice box and carried internally by bone and tissue to our inner ear).  Have you ever heard your own voice on a recording and wondered why it sounds different? Why it lacks the resonance you hear when you speak? It’s because you’re hearing it solely through air conduction.

We are in the early stages of truly understanding both the underlying mechanism as well as the groups for whom the Dreampad is most effective.  Preliminary research and clinicians familiar with the Dreampad suggest that sound waves coming from the Dreampad are activating the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) via the vagus nerve. The PNS helps you regulate stress.  If we’re in a state of elevated stress, the PNS is the part of our nervous system which suppresses the anxious response, allowing you to relax. Dreampad is currently collaborating with university research teams to further measure the effect of product’s music on different ages and conditions.  To see completed Dreampad research, please visit our Research page.

How we’re working with Veterans

iLs has donated dozens of Dreampads to the Wounded Warrior Project where they are giving them to soldiers in therapy.  The WWP coaches are using a customized version of the Pittsburgh sleep Index to gather pre/post results:

  • 86% report ‘significant improvement’ in their sleep as a result of the Dreampad
  • 21% report it’s a ‘game changer’
  • 71% report it helps them fall asleep
  • 90% report it helps them stay asleep

New Dreampad Research

A new Dreampad study is about to launch at University of Colorado, Denver, where Dr. Jim Grigsby will be measuring the effect of bone conduction on heart rate variability as well as galvanic skin response. The study will be conducted on approximately 70 adults for the purpose of determining the effect of bone conducted sound on the parasympathetic nervous system.

The new study will add to data collected Jan Nelson, OTR who used the Dreampad with 10 vets, 100% of whom saw significant improvements in their sleep behavior.  The results are also consistent with Columbia University Medical findings as well as a recent informal study done by SleepScore Labs: the Dreampad’s best results are consistently in the area of deeper sleep and fewer awakenings during the night.
