Stroke

Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions — motion, speech, self-awareness — shut down one by one. In this 18-minute video,  My Stroke of Insight, she recounts her experience, her recovery and shares a hopeful message for what she learned.

If this topic is relevant to you, you may also enjoy Jill Bolte Taylor’s book of the same name, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey. While written in 2006, it is still very relevant.  Especially the second section of the book wherein she describes her interactions with her doctors, nurses, and residents and the effects their different approaches had on her state and her outlook.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease that is receiving more attention lately, especially in the National Football League (NFL) as repetitive head trauma is believed to trigger CTE.

Dr. Ann McKee, Director of the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, has played an important role in the understanding that repetitive “mild” head trauma can provoke persistent and progressive neurodegeneration. In this video, she explains what CTE is, what causes it, how it spreads, its symptoms, and how the disease is diagnosed.
