About the Provider

Disciplines/credentials: Craniosacral therapist, psychotherapist, yoga therapist
Modalities: Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), SI/processing, trauma, yoga therapy, craniosacral and body work, mindfulness, Yoga Nidra, Ayurveda

Client Background

Name: Lui
Age and Gender: 19-year-old boy
Program Delivered: Integrated Listening System Calming Program, Sensory & Motor Program, and Concentration & Attention Program

Lui was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, and with an atypical autism diagnosis at a young age.

Throughout his life, he received treatment to help him developmentally. As a child, he participated in several types of therapy, including occupational, physiotherapy, sensory integration and Castillo Morales®. He also practiced yoga and had a nutritionist to help him meet exercise and nutrition goals.

As an adult, he lived part-time with his family and spent the majority of his time in a community house for young adults with special needs.

His mother and provider, Emmamaria Vincentz, recommended the Integrated Listening System (ILS) to help Lui improve areas he wanted to develop. This included refining his fine motor planning, reducing his stutter, and learning to read and write.

Implementation of the Integrated Listening System (ILS)

Lui listened to the ILS in person. During his listening sessions, he preferred to be engaged in a physical activity, such as yoga or badminton. Afterward, he would relax with a calming task, such as drawing or putting laundry on a clothesline.

Response

After completing several sessions with the ILS, Lui made noticeable progress in many areas that he and his provider targeted.

His ability to read and write improved, allowing him to communicate more effectively. In addition, his stutter reduced “quite profoundly,” giving him more freedom to speak without frustration. Emmamaria noted that his speech patterns improved in general, indicating that the increase in communicative skills was all-encompassing.

Lui’s fine motor skills also improved, although Emmamaria indicated that it would be an ongoing process for Lui to continue building these skills.

Discussion

Emmamaria indicated that she believes the ILS is effective, especially when combined with enthusiastic consent from the client. She noted that it is important to “respect boundaries” and “stop when [a client] says ‘no.’ ” Allowing a client more autonomy in their listening sessions deepens the trust between the client and provider.
