About the Provider

Name: Andrew Lovell
Disciplines/credentials: Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Modalities: Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)

Client Background

Name: Jeremy (pseudonym)
Age and Gender: Adult man
Program Delivered: Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)

When Jeremy began therapy in March 2024, he was seeking help to deal with his history of trauma. As an infant, he experienced birth trauma and a parent’s separation. Within his family, there was a history of mental health conditions affecting both his parents and siblings. He also carried the personal experience of discovering his sister six years ago after she lost her life to suicide.

In the subsequent years, Jeremy became emotionally withdrawn, eventually reaching a point where he had become “completely shut down,” according to his provider. He struggled with the connection between his mind and body, only perceiving limited tastes and smells. This was his primary reason for meeting with his provider, Andrew Lovell. Jeremy hoped to reach a state of regulation where he would no longer be in a perpetual state of sympathetic and dorsal activation. He wanted to reconnect with his body and not feel emotionally shut down anymore.

Implementation of the Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)

Initially, Jeremy began RRP sessions with his provider present, co-regulating together in Andrew’s office. After completing the Introductory Level, Jeremy then transitioned to listening to RRP remotely, completing daily sessions right before bedtime.

Response

Jeremy’s provider, Andrew, described his results as “profound.” For Jeremy, the most significant outcome was the renewed connection he felt with his body. As he progressed in the program, he felt his freeze response “thaw,” gradually becoming more aware and less tense. This allowed him to experience a number of sensations while listening to RRP, including feeling the rhythm of his breathing, yawning and salivating.

Reconnecting Jeremy’s nervous system with his physical awareness enabled him to release pent-up emotions, which provided “a new sense of ease for the first time ever in his life.” He finally felt he could release some anger in a gentle way, which further encouraged the reconnection between his body and mind. He felt as though he had actualized his goal of feeling regulated, stating, “I definitely feel [regulation] is a possibility now. I have hope!”

After completing the full program, Jeremy continued listening to RRP before falling asleep. He also continued his concurrent therapy, reaching out to an interim Somatic Experiencing therapist when Andrew went on vacation. Jeremy also began venturing out into the world again, rekindling with his friends.

Discussion

RRP offered a new professional opportunity for provider Andrew Lovell. Previously, he had created a technology-free space in his office, barring cellphones and similar devices from his sessions. Opening up the office to listening therapies pushed him out of his comfort zone, and he felt the results validated this choice. He stated that the benefits for Jeremy and future clients “substantially” assuages any fears about using technology in sessions.

After witnessing Jeremy’s results, Andrew recommends RRP for clients who present with anxiety and general nervous system dysregulation, as well as those with childhood trauma. He believes that RRP is a non-intrusive intervention that allows clients to make self-discoveries on their own schedule, providing a greater sense of autonomy and courage.
