In on-demand Provider Spotlight webinar, Unyte welcomes four special guests from Witherslack: Clinical Director Billy Smallwood, Regional Clinical Director Waveney Patel and Senior Therapists and SSP Providers, Karen Tootill and Hayley Crawford.

Witherslack Group is the U.K.’s leading education provider for children and young people with special educational needs. Their mission is to deliver specialized education and support for those with social, emotional, mental health and communication needs. Students present with a range of presentations including autism, speech and language difficulties, ADHD and complex learning needs.

Watch this session to learn how the SSP has supported this mission of specialized support and learning through foundational safety, increasing capacity and receptiveness towards relationships, connection and readiness for learning. We discussed how the SSP was integrated into the Witherslack Group’s therapeutic model and why psychological safety plays such a foundational role in young people.

Billy Smallwood

Clinical Director at Witherslack Group

Billy Smallwood  (Group Analyst (M.InstIGA) B.Ed (Hons). PGDip TCC)  is Clinical Director for Witherslack Group.

Billy Smallwood is the esteemed National Clinical Director at the Witherslack Group, a role she has held for the past four years. Billy oversees the clinical direction and strategy, ensuring that the highest standards of care are maintained across all locations. Her leadership and clinical insights play a pivotal role in shaping the services provided to children and young people with complex needs.

Billy has had extensive practice and strategic management experience within specialist schools, residential and foster care within the NHS, charity and independent sectors and specializes in developing and implementing evidence-based therapeutic models of practice to meet children and young people’s social, emotional, and mental health needs. 

Waveney Patel

Regional Clinical Director at Witherslack Group

Waveney Patel is an accomplished Clinical Psychologist with a rich background in child and adolescent mental health and family services. She brings extensive experience and a demonstrated history of excellence in psychology, healthcare management, autism spectrum disorders, and mental health. Waveney has been the Regional Director for Clinical Services at the Witherslack Group,  since February 2021. In this capacity, she provides strategic leadership and oversees clinical operations, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care for children and young people with complex needs.

Before joining the Witherslack Group, Waveney had previous roles also include serving as the Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Team Lead in the NHS – National Health Service where she led the multi-agency Wellbeing and Mental Health in Schools (WAMHS) project in addition to other roles as a Clinical Psychologist for community services across schools and social care.
