The Science Behind the Dreampad

img_0498Every time we speak we hear ourselves in two way: externally and internally.  Our voice carries through the air waves and enters our outer ear; simultaneously, the vibration from our larynx is carried by the body (primarily our bones, which are excellent conductors) to the inner ear.  Have you ever noticed that your voice sounds different when you’re hearing it played back in a recording?  The difference is because you’re not getting the resonance of the internal sound you receive when you speak.

The Dreampad technology replicates this natural process by playing music through transducers which convert the music into a vibration that travels internally to your inner ear.

One positive aspect of this is that you’re not disturbing others in the room when you’re using the Dreampad.  More importantly, as the vibration moves toward the bony area surrounding your middle and inner ear, it is triggering your body’s relaxation response.  Clinical data by researchers suggests that the calming effect of the Dreampad is a result of the vibrational music stimulating the vagus nerve, which in turn activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).  Our PNS helps us regulate stress – if we’re in a state of hyper-arousal, or elevated stress, the PNS is the part of our nervous system which brings us down to a calmer place where we can relax and fall asleep.

The Sound of Waves Program

The new Dreampad music app includes a rhythmic breathing exercise in which you synch your breath to the sound of ocean waves.

Slow and focused deep breathing has been used over the centuries in many cultures to calm the mind. In today’s stressful world, it’s a wonderful tool for relaxing the body and mind whether the goal is to de-stress or have a good night’s sleep. Research shows that rhythmic breathing has the following effects:

  • Reduce stress and engage our nervous system’s relaxation response
  • Lower blood pressure and heart rate
  • Increase production of GABA, a neurotransmitter which reduces stress
  • Increase vagal tone, a key indicator of a healthy heart and a relaxed mind
The Sound of Waves: Rhythmic Breathing to De-Stress

The Sound of Waves program uses the rhythmic pattern of waves as a guide for your breathing. The idea is to sync your inhale/exhale rhythm with the ebb and flow of the wave, and maintain that pattern for an entire session (which could be a 10-minute de-stress session or a few minutes before falling asleep).

The 3 program options move at different breathing rates:  Level I is a rate of 7 breaths per minute (bpm), Level II is a rate of 6 bpm, Level III is a rate of 5 bpm. We recommend starting at Level II; if your natural breathing pace is longer (slower) than the wave pattern, move up to Level III.  As you become practiced, you will feel like you are breathing with the ocean and it will become easier and easier to fall into this rhythm when you lie down, or awake in the middle of the night.

Getting Started

  • To find which level is right for you, start at Level II and see how it goes. If keeping up with the pattern makes you out of breath, try going down to Level I. The volume level should be clearly audible but on the quiet side.
  • Begin inhaling at the point of silence right after the wave breaks. As you slowly inhale, you can hear the wave beginning to build. You will take a full deep breath as the wave builds and then slowly exhale as it breaks.
  • After the wave breaks there is a moment of silence at which time you should be completing your exhale and beginning to inhale again. Again, inhale as the wave begins to build, and exhale as it breaks.
  • You can lie either on your side, or on your back with your head turned to the side to better hear the wave.
  • Breathing through your nose, begin each breath in the abdomen so that your stomach comes out as you inhale. (Placing one hand on the stomach can help you focus on this.)
  • As you breath in and out, allow your exhale to lengthen; it should be slow and relaxed, and longer than your inhale.


  • Don’t worry about precision; your breathing should be approximately in sync with the wave cycle
  • Counting your breaths can sometimes help keep your mind from wandering. Count to 10 breaths and start over.
  • If your mind wanders off and you find yourself re-thinking the same old stuff, don’t get frustrated. Come back to breathing with the rhythm of the wave. One breath at a time.

Who should use the Dreampad?

The Dreampad is a pleasant, relaxing experience for both children and adults. In particular, it is helpful for those who experience stress and have difficulty sleeping.

What is included when I purchase the Dreampad?

The Dreampad is a comfortable pillow with embedded Intrasound Technology™.  Each Dreampad purchase includes a free download of the Dreampad Sleep App from the Apple or Android store.  In addition, a Dreampad purchase includes instructions for use and a 6-ft extension cable.

How quickly will I see improved sleep and anxiety?

We are all unique and have different reactions to the Dreampad. Try it each night for a few days, at least, before you judge whether or not it’s for you.  Clinicians report positive results with about 80% of their patients in the areas of stress reduction and improved sleep.

How can I know if it will work for me?

Are there any health warnings regarding the Dreampad?

There are two health related caveats around Dreampad usage. We recommend that those prone to motion sickness begin using the Dreampad in short sessions of 10 minutes to make sure the vibrational music does not trigger a reaction a reaction similar to that of motion sickness. We also caution against leaving the Dreampad in the crib of a child one year or younger because of the risk of suffocation. Children and adults with medical conditions should consult their doctor before using.

Does the Dreampad emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR)?

The Dreampad device is functionally closer to a speaker than a phone, i.e. it does not emit EMR.   However, many people are concerned about radio waves emitted from phones.  The jury is still out on this but for those who prefer to be cautious (as we do), we suggest putting your phone on Airplane Mode when using it with the Dreampad.  In this mode, no signals can come in or go out.   Alternatively, you can use the Dreampad Bluetooth. This emits EMR but at a miniscule level (for comparison purposes, think of your cell phone reaching a tower miles away vs. the Bluetooth which has a reach of about 33 feet).

What is the youngest, and oldest age one can use the Dreampad?

The Dreampad has been used safely in clinical environments with infants; however, we do not recommend using it with children under 12 months of age without medical supervision.  Of course, the Dreampad, like all pillow-type products, should not be left in the crib of a child under 12 months of age because of the risk of suffocation.  There is no age restriction for seniors using the product.

How is the Dreampad used?

Download the free app, connect your playback device (usually your smart phone or an mp3 player) directly to the Dreampad, or use Bluetooth to control the music wirelessly.  A Bluetooth receiver is available on the Dreampad store as an accessory.  Experiment with the Dreampad music options and volume levels to find what’s best for you.  Note: side sleepers will use a much lower volume level than back sleepers.

Should I use a pillowcase?

We recommend using an appropriate sized pillow case with your Dreampad to keep it clean.  Pillowcases are also available for purchase on the Dreampad website store.

Can I keep the Dreampad on all night?

When you begin using the Dreampad, we recommend setting the music sessions at 2 hours or less.  After a week or so, you should be acclimated to the vibrational music and you can set the timer for longer periods.  In particular, those who tend to wake up during the night like to set the music to play throughout the night to bring them back into a sleep state if they wake up.

Is it okay to use the Dreampad under my pillow?

Yes, the vibration from the Dreampad usually conducts up through other pillows.  You can hear it and will experience the same relaxing effect.  You may want to increase the volume level slightly.

If I wake up in the middle of the night can I turn the Dreampad on again?

Yes, the program can be re-started in the middle of the night but this may not be conducive to falling back asleep. Alternatively, you can set the program to run for a specific number of hours through the App.

Does it take time to get comfortable with the Dreampad?

Some people find it takes several nights to acclimate to the Dreampad.

Can I use the Dreampad while reading or doing homework?

Yes, reading or studying while using the Dreampad is fine and may actually help your focus and attention.

May I lie on either my back or side?

Yes, either is fine. The volume should be lower when sleeping on your side. Keep in mind that it’s easy to adjust the volume level by simply moving your head slightly toward, or away from, the center of the Dreampad.

Does my ear need to be against the center of the Dreampad (which emits the music) to receive the benefits?

No, as long as your head is touching some part of the Dreampad and you can hear the music, you will receive the benefits.

What is the 6-ft extension cable used for?

The extension cable may be used as an extension to the connection to your smart device if you prefer not to have it close to your pillow.  Simply connect the extension cable to the Dreampad and to your phone, and keep the phone of a night table or drape it over the side of the bed.  This also allows you to keep your phone plugged in and charging while listening during the night.

What kind of music is included with the Dreampad?

Dreampad music is developed by iLs based on the latest sleep research findings, including the core aspects of tempo, frequency and brain wave activity during sleep.  The music programs are downloaded to one’s own device (either by an App for both Apple and Android formats, or music files for non-smart devices).  An MP3 player with the Dreampad music pre-loaded is also available for purchase at  The music selections are then specifically processed to maximize the calming effect and the quality of sound through the Dreampad’s Intrasound Technology.

What is the ‘right’ volume level for the Dreampad?

The volume should be set at a comfortable level that allows you to relax and fall asleep. Too loud and you won’t be able to relax, too soft and you will find yourself straining to hear the music. Experiment with the volume; test it in different sleeping positions. A couple points to keep in mind: 1) the volume required to hear the music when lying on your back is typically higher than when sleeping on your side, 2) lie quietly for a minute and you will realize your ability to hear the music at a low volume improves as you listen.

How long does the music play?

The Dreampad Sleep App has a timer so you can set the music to play as long as you wish.  If you purchase a pre-loaded mp3 player with the Dreampad music, each song plays for two hours and can be set to repeat if you wish.

How long can one continue to use the Dreampad?

There is no restriction on the duration of use, nor any known negative effects from extended use, although we recommend starting with shorter sessions to ensure that you are acclimated to the unique vibrational input (also called ‘bone conducted music’) before listening for longer periods of time.

Can I listen to my own music with the Dreampad?

The music that comes with the Dreampad is specifically created for use with Intrasound Technology for the purpose of falling and staying asleep.  However, if you wish to listen to your own music through the Dreampad, we encourage you to experiment and enjoy different types of music.

I can’t hear the music. Am I supposed to?

Yes, the music should be audible; this is not a subliminal music program.  If you can’t hear the music, a) make sure it’s playing by listening to it without the Dreampad, b) check your volume level, and c) make sure your connections are good.  We recommend listening at a relatively low volume level.  If there is ambient noise in the room, this will interfere with your ability to hear the Dreampad music, so we suggest either turning off the ambient sound or raising the volume of the Dreampad

I like the music, but it makes me feel awake.

The music is probably either too loud or too engaging. First, make sure the volume isn’t so loud that it is preventing sleep. Second, consider changing to one of the other music options. Note: This problem is usually mentioned by those listening to the classical selection. Switching to one of the ambient selections usual.

Can I return the Dreampad if I don’t like it?

We think you will love the Dreampad, but if you are not happy with your purchase you can return it within 30 days for a full refund of the purchase price less shipping.  The Dreampad must be returned in the original packaging with all parts and accessories in good condition to receive a refund. Note: Some people take a few days to adjust to the Dreampad. We recommend you try it for at least a few days before deciding to return the product.

Can I wash the Dreampad?

The Dreampad contains electronic components that cannot be washed. Please spot clean only.

Is there a product warranty?

The Dreampad is warranteed for one year from the date of purchase against manufacturer defects. Coverage is valid only with proof of purchase. Alteration of the Dreampad will void warranty.
