The Dreampad

Our Dreampad™ technology delivers music through gentle, calming vibration which only you can hear. This process brings about a relaxation response from the body and mind which has been aptly described as a “massage to the nervous system.”

Dreampad Music

Treated specifically for delivery through Intrasound Technology, Dreampad music emphasizes frequencies of the auditory spectrum most conducive for relaxation and sleep. All programs have a default play setting of two hours.  This can be adjusted for those who prefer longer or shorter playing times.

“We have almost every client use the Dreampad for a week or two prior to the regular iLs program. If there’s an auditory hypersensitivity issue, it’s addressed before using headphones; if there’s an anxiety or sleep issue, the clients often purchase one to use on a regular basis while they are doing therapy. Works extremely well for probably 80-90% of our clients.“ – Sarah Feldman, PhD, LPC, BCBA, Clinic Director

How does the Dreampad work?

The Dreampad products combine iLs’ psychoacoustic expertise with Intrasound Technology™, which is based on the natural conductivity of the human body. Our bones are natural conductors; in fact, every time you speak the vibration caused by your voice is carried by bone to your inner ear. In the same way, music from the Dreampad travels internally to your ear.

All materials conduct sound, some better than others. For example, water is a well-known conductor for whales’ voices over long distances. Your human voice is carried by both air (to the outer ear) and bone (to the inner ear) whenever you speak. Hearing the resonance of your own voice internally when you speak accounts for the difference in how your voice sounds to you when played back from a recording, when you hear only the air conducted sound.

Intrasound Technology™ replicates this natural process by using electromechanical transducers to convert the electrical signals of the music into vibrations. The vibrations are carried by bone to the area surrounding the middle and inner ear (cochlea/vestibular apparatus), which play a key role in our hearing, balance, coordination and our ability to filter out unwanted noise. It is also an area which is connected to our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) through the Vagus Nerve.

Parasympathetic stimulation facilitates our relaxation response (as opposed to our Sympathetic Nervous System, which gives us “fight or flight”). Preliminary research shows that the Dreampad is effective in stimulating the PNS, resulting in a calming response which aids in falling, and staying, asleep. Research is underway to further explore the effect of the Dreampad on the following populations: stress-related insomnia, trauma, veterans with PTSD, children with ADHD and ASD, and cancer patients experiencing insomnia.

Dreampad Research

  • A Sleep Intervention for Children with Autism: A Pilot Study (PDF)– The aim of this study was to examine the immediate, short-term effects of Integrated Listening Systems’ (iLs) Dreampad™ on the sleep behaviors of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In addition, this study examined the effects of changes in sleep patterns on parent and family measures of stress and quality of life.
  • HRV Study measuring the effect of the Dreampad on relaxation using heart rate variability (HRV) as the measure; HRV is widely considered the most authoritative reference for the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which governs our relaxation response.

Which Dreampad is right for you?

All models include iLs’ Intrasound Technology with music available through a pre-loaded Sony Walkman mp3 player (optional) or a free, downloadable app.
