Natural Drug-free ADHD Therapy

The first thing that parents are typically handed after a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is a prescription for a drug that promises to address the behaviors of an inattentive and easily distracted kid.  The promise of change is inviting, but the stories of side effects make many parents hesitate to begin prescription medications before attempting alternatives.

Medication can be the right choice for many kids, but it’s important to know there are options that can be tried before subjecting a child to a lifetime of prescription drugs.

ADD/ADHD stems from the brain’s inability to effectively organize and process information.  While prescription drugs work by increasing the cerebellum’s ability to function, brain training uses various methods to rewire the brain and train it to naturally produce its own hormones.  When the brain is operating at an optimal level, it produces everything it needs. Bio-feedback and Listening Therapy have both been shown to be effective ways to naturally increase this production.

Bio-feedback uses electrical sensors to train the brain to attend to a certain task.  When the brain maintains focus, the ensuing reward becomes motivation to continue to focus.  In one example, a video plays only as long as the student stays focused on the video. When the student’s thoughts wander, the video is disrupted.  Continued use of the video reward trains the brain to maintain focus for longer periods of time.

Listening therapy uses high and low frequency sound waves to improve the brain’s ability to organize information. High frequency sound waves are generally associated with attention and concentration.  With appropriate frequency, duration and intensity, the changes created through listening therapy are permanent as the plasticity of the brain ensures. When music is also delivered through bone conduction and combined with movement, whole body organization is improved leading to a more effective foundation for attention and concentration.

It is unclear whether the oil of plants physically changes the brain in any way.  But success stories are common enough to suggest that at least the calming effect of oils can provide relief to a student with ADHD.  Lavender, peppermint and sage oil are commonly cited for use with kids and adults with ADHD. Chewing peppermint gum, spraying lavender in a study area or inhaling the scent of sage may be a natural way to increase concentration and attention.

The brain is an organ that needs nutrients to fuel its work.  Limiting poor sources of nutrition while increasing valuable nutrients can go a long way to support brain function. Sugar, sugar substitutes, processed foods and food dyes have a proven negative effect on brain function.  Look for food dyes, especially Red Dye #40, high fructose corn syrup and artificial ingredients on food labels and limit the use of these foods. Everyone is different. It helps to test for food sensitivities first to give you a better idea which foods to avoid.  Foods high in antioxidants and omega-3s such as fish, blueberries, whole wheat, seeds and sage have all been shown to improve memory and concentration.

Navigating a course for a child or other loved one with ADD/ADHD can be tricky.  What works for one may not be valuable for another. The key is to find lifestyle changes that are effective and can be easily folded into a routine. Medication might be the answer in the end, but if  non-medication alternatives significantly improve attention and concentration, it’s a win-win.
